On November 6 -- ONE WEEK FROM TODAY -- we’ll have the opportunity to elect a slate of fantastic candidates who have proven themselves as fighters for public education. And, if we can get these candidates the resources they need, we may even be able to elect a pro-public education majority.

Unfortunately, we don’t have the luxury of sitting back while the future of public education is decided. There are legislators in Lansing and in Washington, D.C., right now who want to cut funding for public schools and entirely privatize education. They see education solely as a profiteering opportunity. Who we elect right now will have a say on public education for the foreseeable future.

It’s our job as educators to always do what’s in the best interests of our students. And right now, making sure that we elect the right candidates to office is the best thing we can do for our students. They’re counting on us.

Since the 2016 Election, we’ve seen our country move in a direction that has been alarming to many. While we continue to fight for the future of public education in Michigan, Betsy DeVos and her Department of Education continue to stand in our way.

This year is about holding elected officials accountable. From now until Election Day, we’ll be working hard to elect pro-public education candidates up and down the ticket. This is a big year.

Next week, we’re headed to the polls to elect a new Governor, plus our U.S. Senator, U.S. Representatives, State Senators, State Representatives, State Supreme Court Justices, and candidates running for local office. Each of these offices in their own way has the power to move our public education agenda forward.

There are candidates running for these offices who don’t believe in what we do. People that want to privatize education or create more “competition”...as if we’re building Buicks and not educating students. These are candidates who want to defund our schools. There’s a lot at stake right now.

Big changes are coming for our state and our country. We need to make sure that we’re headed in the right direction.  If we want to elect a pro-public education majority to Lansing and Washington, it’s going to take every single one of us stepping up to do our part. These candidates need our votes, but they also need the power of our wallets.
